Master: Sit here, young one. Tell me about your round.
Student: Oh, wise Yoda-like figure. My mind is not large enough for this game. I swing my driver with a heavy heart, knowing the weak slice that is to come. I envision my greatness on the first tee, but I walk up the last fairway knowing my true failings. My three putts are a burden on my soul.
Master: It was said by the great master, Hagen, that all golfers are to expect poor shots. That these are to be accepted and loved.
Student: Master, I lost 15 bucks Saturday.
Master: Remember this question at the start of each round, and when your game is completed ask it to yourself again, “Does the ball want to go to the hole?”
Long ago, when I too was a bogey golfer, I came to my master who lives under the Sarazen Bridge and lamented. He asked me this question and I could not answer. Many rounds passed with inevitability until I received the gift he had bestowed. I went to his bedside in the nursing home for wayward golf gurus. He asked me the question “Does the ball want to go to the hole?” and I whispered, “The birds sing in the trees.” He smiled with radiance and he died.
Student: The birds sing in the trees? That’s the answer?
Master: No, you must find your own answer. When you do, you will no longer be a bogey golfer. You will be a bogey golfer who is one inch closer to true enlightenment.
Cameo appearance by Bill Murray: So, you got that goin’ for ya….
